What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a procedural system that is used to treat disease, prevent illness and promote well being. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional problems. Acupuncture originated in China more than 5000 years ago and due to its proven effectiveness has been embraced throughout the world. It is a system of medicine where no complaint is viewed in isolation. Rather, the body, mind, and soul are evaluated together. The goal lies in restoring and promoting the smooth flow of Qi (pronounced "chee"). Qi is ones life force involved in breathing, metabolism, and emotions, along with all our body functions. Disease occurs when Qi is impaired, insufficient, rebellious, or excessive. This impairment can occur for many reasons including injury, trauma, emotions, stress, lifestyle, and exposure to heat or cold.
The treatment includes hair-thin sterile needles that are placed into the skin. The art and science of acupuncture involves the choice of points, the direction and depth of the insertion and the subtle manipulation of the needle in the patient’s body. All these factors determine the stimulus the patient will feel.
Acupuncture, simply stated, is a health science used to successfully treat both pain and dysfunction of the body.

How does Acupuncture Work?
The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that holds up the flow.
Needling the acupuncture points can influence the meridians: the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals as in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals will either decrease the perception, or they will trigger the release of mediators and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system.
The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in the stimulation of the body’s natural healing abilities, and the promotion of physical and emotional well-being without the use of drugs or surgery.

Does Acupuncture Really Work?
Since acupuncture promotes the body’s natural healing, most conditions can be corrected or improved. The effectiveness of acupuncture is well documented and extends far beyond the conception that it is only useful for chronic pain management or as an analgesic. Many athletes have discovered that acupuncture treatments helped them to achieve optimum performance levels. Throughout its long history, acupuncture has established a solid reputation as a system of preventative medicine that works. Treatments using needles is the most common form of acupuncture, however, other therapies include heat therapy, mild electrical stimulation, magnets, massage and herbs.

Do the Needles Hurt?
People experience acupuncture needling differently. Some patients feel only minimal pain as the needles are inserted: most feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place, there is no pain. In fact, many patients fall into a peaceful sleep.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?
The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. Generally, for complex or chronic conditions, one or two treatments a week for several months may be recommended. For acute problems, usually fewer visits are required, and for health maintenance, four sessions a year may be all that is necessary.
Many patients turn to acupuncture when other methods of treatment have failed. To expect a 100% cure after one treatment would be setting both the patient and practitioner up for disappointment. You and your practitioner should discuss a reasonable schedule of treatments that would allow you to evaluate your progress.

Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe medical procedure when administered by a qualified practitioner. Pre-sterilized, disposable needles are the only needles that are used in my practice. Each needle is wrapped in a special package and is disposed of in a container which is collected by “Sharps Compliance, Inc.”
